Monthly Game Review

This month…

Medal of Honor: Airborne

There have been countless World War II games in the world, and sometimes you wonder, “Which one is better?” While Activision holds strong with Call of Duty, Electronic Arts decides to step into the fray with Medal of Honor: Airborne.
You are PFC Boyd Travers in the 82nd Airborne division, and after a quick tutorial on how to properly land your jumps, you are thrown right into the line of fire (almost literally). You start each level jumping off the airplane, and you have a choice of either landing in a “safe zone” where there is no enemies, or jumping right onto enemy lines and hoping for the best. There are 3 ways you can land your jumps.

1. Flared Landing: This is achieved by pressing “space” at the right time. Upon landing, it’ll take some time pulling your gun out for battle.
2. Botched Landing: This occurs when you let yourself fall to the ground without using the “space” bar. When you botch your landing, you stumble and fall onto you hands, making it longer to get up and pull your gun out.
3. Greased Landing: This is the best landing you can achieve. It is obtained by landing without the “space” bar at a certain angle. Upon hitting the ground, you literally hit the ground running with your gun pulled out and everything. This is best used when your outside the “safe zone”.

It’s nice to know that the game doesn’t dictate where you have to land, but sometimes it’s just safer to land in that “safe zone”.
As you progress, you begin to pick up new weapons and different grenades. An interesting part of the game, is that your gun can receive upgrades when you kill a certain number of Nazis. These upgrades can vary from increased ammo cap., increased zoom, decreased recoil, or (my favorite) a grenade launcher attachment (noobtube!!!).
Aside from the campaign, the multiplayer is actually pretty good. Killing people doesn’t waste your entire clip, and PunkBuster (as used in many Battlefield games) is enabled to prevent hackers.
Graphically, this game is stunning. With every reflection and texture, it proves itself for PC gaming. The cutscenes are smooth running and not cheesy (except for one scene), and it can put up an interesting challenge. Though only available for Digital Download, it’s totally worth the 10 dollars.
